Meanwhile, Back at the Blog…..

How do bloggers do it? I can’t believe how much time has gone by since I’ve sat down for a chat with y’all. We are busy getting ready for It’s a Colorful World to be released next month. I LOVE this book. Jason has knocked it out of the park with his quirky illustrations. I have been previewing this book on our Read and Dance Tour at book signings and schools and the kids just love it. It’s a nice companion book to Let’s Dance. We get the kids up and moving and showing all their moves and then we play “what’s that color” and “find the frog” in Colorful World. I am kind of late getting advance P.R. on this title. One of the challenges of a small press is getting materials in 3 or 4 months ahead of time. We don’t have the muscle yet with our printers to get them to do early F&G’s (unbound advance copies) without additional expense. But not to worry, we are full steam ahead now sending out books and arranging signings.

Some of you have asked for Ava stories so here is my latest. The day before Easter we continued a family tradition started with my kids. They get an empty Easter basket and go on a little scavenger hunt to fill it. Obviously since she’s only three, we made it simple. We told her to look for chewed carrots since Mr. Bunny tends to drop them where he has planted eggs. On Easter we went to brunch at the Park Tavern which is right on Piedmont Park. Then we played wiffle ball and walked around and fed the ducks. A wonderful beautiful day. My favorite moment was when Ava snuggled into me and said, “Grandma, you make my heart super happy.”

Back at you honey, a million times over.

Please Don’t Smother Grandma

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Erin and Leah and Ava and I met up for an impromptu lunch yesterday.  I love these informal gatherings.  It’s like an uplifting little present in the middle of a tough work day.  We stopped first at a Pottery Barn and Ava and I discovered the absolute best place to hide was in the rug rack.  After a few games of “YOU CAN”T FIND US” with Leah and Erin playing Sherlock Holmes and Watson, we headed out to lunch.   An hour later I headed back home with Ava in tow to put her down for a nap so that Leah could have a few hours of toddler-free silence to run some errands.

We snuggled up to read several books prior to the nap but when I went to leave, Ava got uncharacteristically aggressive.  She jumped all over the bed laughing loudly trying to entice me to stay.  Then she moved the pillow on my head and jumped!  This is one time Grandma was happy to have a little meat on her bones.  If I was one of those spindly elderly grandmas with brittle bones I think she could have done me in!

I moved 35 pounds of pillow and toddler off of me and said sternly, “Please don’t smother Grandma,” to which she replied, “That hurt my feelings.”   Don’t you just love how kids’ minds work?  A few minutes later she settled down for her nap and I went back to work with a smile on my face and the cozy feeling of a sleeping child upstairs.

Dear Santa,

Friday, December 18th, 2009

I’ve had a couple moments in the last few weeks that let me know we are on the right path. We were put on a recommended books list on buybooksfortheholidays.com.  Books a million ordered a couple hundred copies of our first book Dear Baby, What I love about you! and our 2nd book Dear Baby, Let’s Dance! that is being released February 1st. Thank you to the BAM folks and to National Book Network ace rep Janet Fairchild. We’ve also been getting some wonderful mail and mommy blogger reviews. Updates on all of this can be found on the home page.  And for my big news….. Dear Baby, What I love about you! has been quoted in an important letter to Santa.

Our daughter-in-law Leah called to let me know that she and Ava were “writing” a letter to Santa. Ava would tell her what to put in the letter and on her wish list and as they were finishing up, Ava had one last thing to add. “Tell Santa he’s my one of a kind wonderful adorable YOU!” I can’t imagine having one of my books quoted will ever make me feel quite this good again.

Snapshots of a Visiting Toddler

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Quick picks of favorite Ava moments the last few weeks. Hats off to Mommy Bloggers.  I don’t know how you do it every day!

The last day of Ava’s week long visit with us I was working at home in 5 and ten minute spurts, I managed to get some of my business list checked off.  But the funny thing is Miss Ava definitely knows when she is being given the brief toddler brush-off.  I finished my work and said brightly “LET”S COLOR SOME PUMPKINS NOW!”   Ava’s response: “Not now, Grandma.  I’m WORKING!”    She climbed on my office chair and busily clicked away at the keys.  I’ve got to respect a girl who knows how to maker her point.  A few minutes later we colored together and signed the pages with a flourish.  Did you know you can dowload free coloring pages from the Internet?  It’s great!  Is it bad to admit I still like to color?

Taking Time to See the Rain

The best thing about hanging out with a young child is they make you stop and see things you might pass by.  We were on the way downstairs to start our day after a leisurely read and snuggle when Ava pulled me to a stop midway down.  “Look Grandma.  Let’s stop and look at the rain.”   “Okay, I said pulling her further down but first let’s go get some breakfast.” No, NOW.  Let’s watch NOW!”

So we did.  We sat on the stairs and looked through the windows at the rain coming down.  She shook her head sadly.  “Rain is nasty.”  She was no doubt thinking about how our trip to the pumpkin patch would be cancelled.  This led to a discussion about what was good about rain.  How all the flowers are SO thirsty and look forward to a good long drink.  How you can wash your hair in it and kick water up from puddles.  Eventually she got up and looked at me with those big brown eyes and said “Rain is good….AND NASTY.”

Ava has been back home with her mom and dad for a few weeks now and we’ve seen her several times since but we do treasure these occasional overnights and  long visits, however disruptive they are to our schedule.   She sure knows how to light up a room.  Plus, it’s always good for a writer to spend time with her muse.  : )

Grandma and Grandpa’s Excellent Adventure with Ava — Day’s 2 and 3

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Oh dear. I’ve been demoted. After spending Saturday night with Aunt Erin and Uncle Nathan. Nathan is now Ava’s new best friend. Also, Mama’s friend Dawn is her best friend. I must have looked at her like, “WHAT???!!” because she looked at me kindly and said, “No. GRANDMA is Ava’s best friend.” Oh the fickle hearts of two year-olds.

We’ve had our first fight. It involved not shoving open and closed the drawer on Grandma’s end table. She used her best fake cry and ran into Grandpa’s arms.

Speaking of Grandpa. God bless him. I was up at 6:30 Saturday morning with Ava and at 8:30 he took her for a long walk and I got to get a few more hours of sleep.

Does anyone have any good suggestions for brushing or combing snarled hair? Just the mention of a brush sends Ava into hysterics. It’s traumatizing for both of us.

Well, my pink dressed partner in crime and I are off for a walk to Starbucks. Oh!! I buried the lead. The first box of advance copies of Dear Baby, Let’s Dance! arrived about an hour ago. How great that Ava was here for the arrival. We read it together. She already has most of the book memorized from looking at the early versions. THIS IS AVA’s FAVORITE BOOK, she says. For now….. : )

The Simple Things

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

As I write this, my daughter Erin and her dog Hogan are curled up on the couch watching a movie in the next room.  She isn’t feeling very well today, fighting off one of those fall colds that come with weather changes.  Earlier tonight we walked around the neighborhood with John looking at Halloween decorations.  I haven’t had a chance to go grocery shopping since we got back from our trip a few days ago so Erin raided her pantry to bring over some food and I cooked us all a warm rustic dinner of pork chops smothered with mushrooms, onions and wine, mashed potatoes and a plain green salad.  Then we put in a DVD of The Proposal with Sandra Bullock.  The scenery in Alaska is gorgeous and there is good chemistry between Sandra and her costar Ryan Reynolds.

It’s such a pleasure  to be able to do these things spur of the moment.   I tucked a blanket around Erin and came in here to catch up on some work but instead felt like a chat.  This interactive feature is new to our blog so I want to hear from you.  Have you had any simple family moments recently you want to share?

Shadow of the Moon

Sunday, August 16th, 2009
My husband John and I got to experience the first time seeing the book on a BN shelf together and we couldn’t wait to see Ava’s reaction.  She is two and a half and still doesn’t quite understand that she is the person that inspired the first book.  She walks around with the book when she visits and calls it the goo-goo ga-ga book because of a line from the book she loves to repeat.  She just about knows the book by heart now and says it along with us some of the time.  She also thinks it’s fascinating that there are so many of the books laying around and is quite possessive of them.  When she saw a poster in our office that was for a book signing, she ran to and screamed Oh my Gosh!  IT’S THE BABIES!!!

My muse Ava with the book that launched this press.

I don’t know what exactly I expected when my daughter-in-law and I took her to see the book in Barnes and Noble but I guess I kind of hoped for her to understand it was a big occasion.  We pointed it out to her on the shelf and she said OH MY GOSH!  GOODNIGHT MOON, Grandma!  Goodnight Moon has gone missing in our house for the last few months.  We wanted her to pick up MY book for a picture but she kept talking about how we found GOOD NIGHT MOON.  Oh, well.  I have to admit it was pretty funny.  In the end, I scooped her up and set her on the shelf for the picture that sums it all up.
