The Shame of Temporary Blog Abandonment

Monday, September 21st, 2009
Oh, no.  I’ve done it again.  A month has gone by and all the great blogs I wrote in my head never made it to the computer.  I just took another webinar on social media and blog abandonment was listed as a big NO-NO.  It makes your website look naked and abandoned.  Sigh.  I won’t even try and give any good reasons why I haven’t been posting even though I HAVE VERY GOOD REASONS.

What I will do is tell you what happened at the webinar.  For those of you who may not know what a webinar is, it’s basically a seminar held live on the computer.  You can write in comments and at various points you are muted and unmuted.  Well, some people as they got on the site didn’t mute themselves right away so you could hear vague conversations taking place.  Ha! I thought.  Rookies!  The webinar began and the speaker, Author Marketing Expert Penny Sansevieri and her guest speaker started the monumental task of explaining the various kinds of blogging engines and social media outlets and how to install them yourself.  This is not easy information to assimilate if you are new to social media.  As a veteran of two other webinars on this topic I felt like I was following pretty well until the discussion began on how to install it.

Some people could see the circles and arrows made by the moderator and some of us could not.  I started playing around with my page controls and a few circles appeared!  Alas, I quickly figured out that I was making the circles myself.  Since I like to doodle when I am on the phone or at a meeting I started making a lovely assortment of circles and ovals around various pieces of text.  It was quite artistic if I say so myself.  This went on for about 5 or 10 minutes.  As I was contemplating how to make squares, Penny interrupted the guest speaker to say, “Sorry folks, about all those circles.  I have no idea where they’re coming from.”  I let out a gasp of embarrassment and flung myself back so hard on my wheeled office chair that I wore grooves into the (formerly) nice sisal area rug on the floor.

I guess it all comes with the territory of launching a new business and acquiring new information and skills.  Some days you feel you have the world by its tail and other days your doodle is left hanging out there for everyone to see.
